Last August I went to visit my sister who lives on Oahu (sp?) and we booked and Adventure Tour on the big island. Part of the tour was going down to the lava field and viewing area. We didn't get to see lava (tourists never get to be that close) but we could see offin the distance the steam cloud on the shore rising from the lava pouring in the ocan. I posted a picture on my stock account here: [link] It's so cool to bump into someone on deviantART who I've met before!
